Did you tell your valentines that you love them? Much ❤️ to these two! #loveontwowheels #ladyshred #babyshred Yo UK peeps! 🚨 ALERT 🚨 £5 Ibis frame competition! My fellow Ibis rider @bex_baraona is running a fundraiser for @gowaan_gals MTB Festival 2019, peep her bio for more! “Hey, look at that!” Accomplishments in mountain biking are best measured in terms of personal satisfaction. These accomplishments can be as simple as a great run down a gnarly trail, clearing a new jump for the first time, winning a race, procuring a fun video, the list goes on. L
•
Generally accomplishments stem from setting a challenging goal, basically forcing yourself into a box in order to achieve some sort of endeavor. •
Coming from a racing background, the idea of an accomplishment simply being “cleaning a climb” has been a little abstract for me. After all, getting off the bike and cyclocrossing up this section would actually be faster. But the trials and BMX scenes are all about stomping things like this, so I guess it’s not really all that abstract.

For this week’s #techclimbtuesday, I’m throwing it back to late December up on #nationaltrail on #southmountainpreserve. Last year @therobdrew showed me the lines on this infamous section, known as the waterfall. I didn’t see any water, but I did see Rob’s expert guidance, reminding me where to put the wheels to find the combo of traction and momentum needed to clean this little nugget. And after a few tries, the satisfaction I got to pedal on past the crux of this #techclimb got me stoked enough to do three more laps on the mountain! Thanks Rob, and thanks to @bobbyboland for filming! Coming into Monday like... November 11th 2004! I’ve never been good at 360s! This was during Sophomore year of CalPoly SLO university. Either in Santa Barbara or Santa Maria California, and photo was probably taken by @didgeridoc. Man, 15 years flies by!!! #bmxfail #caseofthemondays #mondaybelike #justgonnasendit #bmxdirtjump #trails #morecommitmentthanskills #dobikes #keeppedaling Shred the red! With a week of snow here in Bellingham, memories of a wonderful trip to Sedona, as well as an awesome trip to Tucson, are great reminders of the sport we all love. These winters are really quite mild, and they are requisite for all that #brownpow we enjoy on our #loamlines the rest of the year! Here’s a cheers to winter getaways and to winter in general! #sedonaescape #sedona #sedonaarizona #sedonavortex Do you lean further forwards when you’re cornering or when you’re climbing? Huh. Never thought about that one before! #keeppedaling #dobikes #rideshimano @rideshimano #galbraithmountain #cornering #climbing

Tech climb challenge: South Mountain Waterfall

    #nationaltrail #techclimbtuesday #southmountainwaterfall

Phoenix, Arizona, is well known for it’s South Mountain park, which is covered with rocky and technical trails. The infamous waterfall is a tricky feature indeed, with many riders not even riding down the thing. However, with some creative line choice, it can indeed be ridden up!

It was fun to ride with Bobby (https://www.instagram.com/bobbyboland/) and luckily he didn’t get hurt on any of those tip overs!

  • Sizing modern bikes: the numbers look wild, but they work!

Sizing modern bikes: the numbers look wild, but they work!

Sizing a modern mountain bike means accepting some numbers that appear to be a drastic departure from the norm of just a few years ago. I get asked daily what size bike should folks purchase, so I thought this video would be a great guide.

Have a look at a bunch of modern, new school bikes at Jenson USA here: http://bit.ly/JENSONUSABIKES

    Our podcast: http://bit.ly/KendallVSKendallPodcast

The biggest dilemma that riders tend to face is that these modern bikes have seemingly HUGE reach measurements. However, what many riders don’t understand is that reach is very different from top tube length. Top tube length numbers haven’t actually changed all that much over the years, desopite reach measurements growing massively.

The confusion lies in that many folks think the reach and top tube lengths are either the same measurement or extremely related to one another. They are not. Reach measurement only applies from the center of the BB to the center of the top headset cup. As the seat angle gets steeper, the same length top tube will then push that head tube- and therefore the “reach measurement” way farther forwards.

A great comparison is the medium 2019 Ibis Ripmo vs the medium 2014 Ibis HDR. The HDR sports a reach of 382mm, while the Ripmo is a full 446mm, a difference of 64mm! That’s over a 2.5” difference- massive! However, both bikes actually fit quite similarly, as the top tube length only grew by .7”, or 16mm. Ibis’ recommended rider height guide is the same for both bikes.

Seat tube lengths no longer work alone to measure a frame size. While a 17” frame size used to be a medium, now we use droppers from 170-185mm in drop, making a 17” seat tube more appropriate for an XL sized frame.

All of this comes together to make modern bikes amazingly fun and well rounded. This is a great time to be a mountain biker!

  • Fitting a loooooooong dropper post: science and saws

Fitting a loooooooong dropper post: science and saws

Modern mountain bikes are literally designed around dropper seat posts, and the name of the game has quickly become how to fit the longest possible drop post into your frame. With frames having various possible insertion depths, and with steeper seat angles, the measurements you’ll need to buy the correct post might not be as intuitive as one might think.

Basic formula: Maximum seat post inserted length minus frame’s maximum insertion depth. If it’s a positive number, then add that to the distance of the center of BB to top of seat tube and that will equal the lowest possible seated height.
