When will the Ibis Mojo Ti hit the dirt?

First struggle on the old bike: find a GOOD tire that will actually fit! While I didn’t have to jump through many hoops, I did recycle some old rims I had that turned out to be one of the few options for this build. They are a bit of a unicorn product in that they have both rim brake compatibility AND work with tubeless tires! I scored an original Shimano M-950 hub from my neighbor for $10! Tight on time, and high on enthusiasm, I headed down to the local shop to get the wheel built up. The mechanic took one look at my haggard 355 rim and told me it’d be two weeks for them to get it together. I figured I should just roll the dice and build the wheel myself- what could go wrong? The shop cut me some 260mm spokes on the spot, and I ran home, dreaming about tensiometers and spoke prep the whole way! Once the wheel was together, I could then test fit tires.

Mark Slate, original WTB co-founder and current day co-owner, sent me a care package for the build. Thanks Mark! In that package he included an ORIGINAL WTB SST Ti saddle! SWEET! Mark also included both a Nano 2.1 TCS Tubeless tire and another rather unicorn product: the coveted Mutano 2.2 TCS Tubeless tire. The Mutano was well used, but still had plenty of life in it. I guesstimate it at 10 years old now. But it mounted up great, and IT FITS in the tight chainstays of the bike! What a home run! This should be a KILLER set up!

Other parts that went on the bike this episode include a Shimano XT M8000 11 speed grouppo. I’m using 170mm crank arms, a 34t ring, and an 11-42 cassette. While I’m not particular on 10 vs 11 speed, I AM particular on using modern, splined cranks, as old school square taper BBs are total junk. Seriously. I twisted and snapped many of those 20 years (and 40 pounds) ago! I am also adamant about running a Shadow Plus rear derailleur, as quiet running and proper chain retention is the only way to go. scariest jump I've ever considered

I’ve wanted to send this cliff jump for ages now! When we first moved to town, we saw the jump, and I immediately thought to myself “hey self, would it be possible to send this on a bike?”

Well, an idea is one thing, but actually executing it is often far more difficult! In this case, my nerves were firing MASSIVELY! The jump was big, about 35’ high, and that’s about 34’ higher than I’ve ever dove into water. However, it’s a popular spot for cliff jumpers. I’ve seen plenty of people do this jump (sans bike) so I had a good idea that’s safe and possible. However, it’s late summer, and water levels are at an all time low.

When we first pulled in, there was no one in the water. Then after checking the depth and doing some practice jumps, a local named Logan showed up and did the jump, proving that it was safe. I figured hey, it’s clearly doable! But my nerves were on high alert!

After checking all my details, I had to decide if it was worth it or not. Watch the vid and see what happens next!

The industry is QUITE excited about the new 2.6 size tires coming out!! WTB just released the Vigilante 2.6 as well as the Trailboss 2.6. I just got these tires mounted up on my trusty Mojo 3, using Ibis 742 rims, and I’m starting to log a few miles on them. Thus far, they feel good!

Initial impressions: definitely a lot more footprint on the trail than the old 2.3/2.25 tires, so more available braking and climbing traction, but at the same time, the rebound effect when landing from jumps on hardpacked trails is more pronounced as well.

I’ll be spending a bit more time on these tires before doing a full review, but for now, join me as I mount these tires up and begin to see what they are all about!

I wish we had these parts in the 90s!

SCORE! I’ve always wanted to ride a titanium bike, and I’ve always wanted to build a vintage Ibis. So it’s no surprise that when I saw a 1995 Ibis Mojo Ti (Titanium) for sale on my local Craigslist, I went ahead and swooped up that fine piece of knobby history!

Once I finished explaining to my family WHY I would ever spend so much money on a 28 year old bike, I headed south to Seattle and met Eric, the seller. He also had a rad set of 1996 Marzocchi Z2 forks, which at 80mm of travel, give the bike a slightly raked out feel. I’ll take anything that will help ease the transition from a modern bike!

The little shock that could! DPX2 set up guide!

The Fox Float DPX2 is a great rear shock! I’ve been asked a handful of questions about how to dial in the shock, so here’s how I set up my own bikes!

Mojo 3 settings:
185 psi
4 clicks from max low speed comp
9 clicks from max rebound
.8 volume reducer

Ripley LS settings:
195 psi
6 clicks from max low speed comp
11 clicks from max rebound
.4 volume reducer

It was super interesting installing these shocks simultaneously on both my Ibis Mojo 3 and Ripmo bikes. Not just installing them- but testing them back-to-back on the same trail, too!

The Mojo 3 had a 2016 Factory Series Float rear shock- the OEM, stock shock. My Ripmo had a 2018 Fox Factory Series Float X2 rear shock. Swapping both of these over to 2019 DPX2s has been a very interesting change! Comparing the DPX2 directly to these two (very different) OEM shocks is framing up my next video- a DPX2 review!

Going back and forth from the short travel 27.5 bike to the longer-ish travel 29er was interesting too- the differences between the two steeds was immediately noticeable! The little 27.5 bike indeed felt like a skate board. Short, nimble, easy to get airborne, easy to drift through corners, and a hair out-of-control. Super fun and lively. The Ripmo felt longer, but on the trail, the bike was almost as fun and playful as the Mojo 3, just a little bit harder to get off the ground (it has more suspension travel) but not a slug by any means. On the flip side, WOW, what a confidence boost to have that much traction and stability! The bikes were both fun, just in different ways.

This is one of my favorite trails- short, but oh so sweet! The trails has a great penchant for being treacherous in both the dusty summer conditions as well as in the greased lighting winter rains.

Most of Galbraith is fairly mellow gradient, but Spacewolf capitalizes on some amazing natural features, has tremendous flow, and has a couple legit steep chutes to keep you on your toes. I definitely use my brakes on this trail!
